There are many products on the market today claiming to help stop smoking. But are they effective?
> Nicotine patches > Nicotine Gum
The nicotine replacement patches have been proven to provide some assistance with stopping smoking. Despite their cost, their effectiveness has been proven to reduce the need for nicotine safely.
If you are interested in the nasal sprays and nicotine inhalers then you should research their effects first. Both are available by prescription. Not everyone likes to use a nasal spray. Those who are seeking to help stop smoking by nasal application will need to be allergy and asthma free, as these conditions affect the delivery of the nicotine in the nasal passage. By delivering the nicotine directly to the lungs, the nicotine inhaler ensures it gets to the bloodstream quicker.
Perhaps the medications that claim to aid in quitting are the way for you to become an ex smoker. Some drugs, originally meant for treating depression, have shown some promise in helping you to stop smoking. These same drugs produce the same action as nicotine on the brain by increasing certain chemicals, making us feel good and helping us to focus. Also, these medications can lessen the withdrawal symptoms, giving you the edge you need to overcome this serious addiction.
Something a bit newer on the scene to help stop smoking is Nicotine Anonymous. Following the same 12 step plan as Alcohol Anonymous, these groups are popping up all over the country and on online. Inspite of the fact it is difficult to stop smoking, these groups persevere and remain free from tobacco. They are happy to introduce new members to the twelve step program, and encourage that the new member have sponsorship. They promote education and make people aware of all the risks and consequences assocaited with smoking. Members believe that in order to stay away from nicotine they need to keep themselves as emotionally and physically healthy as they can.
There is a religious undertone to these help stop smoking groups. If you are comfortable with a higher power then you will probably be open to the steps and expectations of the group. Some groups do frown on using any sort of aid to quit smoking, while other groups do not. The program is free and provides a very good support system. If you have been on any other twelve step programs then you are likely to do well with this one. This may be the method for you if you are in tune with your spirituality, or wish to be more in tune!
